Description
Westlake Pipe & Fittings 438101 0.75″ x 0.5″ Spigot x FPT Reducing Bushing
The Westlake Pipe & Fittings 438101 is a precision-engineered Schedule 40 PVC spigot-to-female pipe thread (FPT) reducing bushing designed to serve as a durable and dependable transition fitting in a wide range of plumbing and fluid handling systems. This component is crafted by Westlake Pipe & Fittings—a trusted manufacturer recognized throughout the plumbing, irrigation, and water management industries for producing high-quality PVC pipe and fittings that uphold performance, reliability, and installation ease.
At its core, the 438101 reducing bushing performs a very specific but immensely practical function: it enables the connection of a larger PVC pipe system to a smaller threaded component, effectively reducing pipe size from 3/4″ (0.75″) nominal spigot to 1/2″ female pipe thread (FPT). This transition is critical in systems where components of different sizes must interconnect—for example, where a main PVC distribution line needs to feed into a threaded valve, gauge, sensor, fitting, or piece of equipment with a smaller inlet. By providing this reduction in a single molded part, the 438101 delivers simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and structural integrity in one fitting.
The entire fitting is constructed from Schedule 40 PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a widely accepted material in plumbing and fluid systems known for its strength, chemical resistance, light weight, and corrosion resistance. PVC resists rusting, scaling, and other forms of degradation common in metal fittings when exposed to moisture, salts, or many chemical agents, making it suitable for fresh water, irrigation, pool and spa plumbing, and many general fluid conveyance applications.
Schedule 40 describes a standardized wall thickness appropriate for typical pressure and non-pressure applications. Components built to this standard are designed to work harmoniously with other Schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings, ensuring predictable and secure fitment. The material also supports a broad range of ambient applications, from residential water lines to industrial process plumbing, without frequent maintenance or premature wear.
Because PVC is thermoplastic, the 438101 bushing is also compatible with solvent-cement joining methods on the spigot end. PVC solvent cement creates a strong, homogenous joint between pipe and fitting that’s often as strong as the pipe itself when properly applied. While the threaded side engages mechanical seals (discussed later), the spigot connection affords both permanence and robustness once installed.
Spigot Connection (Large End): The larger side of the fitting features a plain spigot end sized for 0.75″ PVC pipe, allowing it to be solvent-cemented directly into a pipe or fitting with a corresponding socket. This facilitates a seamless PVC-to-PVC joint that reduces leak points and enhances long-term durability.
FPT Threaded Connection (Small End): The opposite end incorporates a ½″ Female Pipe Thread (FPT) built to standard NPT (National Pipe Thread) specifications. Female thread connections receive a compatible male threaded component (e.g., a valve, adapter, or gauge) using thread sealant or PTFE tape to ensure a tight, leak-resistant mechanical connection.
This dual-ended configuration is particularly valuable in systems requiring components with different connection types. For example, a threaded pressure gauge or service valve can be attached directly to the threaded half of the bushing while the other half is solvent-welded to a PVC pipeline, eliminating the need for multiple separate adapters or transition fittings.
